The Millbrook Mysteries

One librarian, one town, and a running argument about what actually happened. Every book closes its own case, so you can start anywhere. Most people start at the beginning and then read the other two in a week.

The Quiet Ledger

When the Millbrook Crossing town clerk dies in her sleep at eighty-one, she leaves behind a tidy house, a tidier ledger, and a locked drawer nobody knew about.

Nora Beckett, who took over the library three weeks earlier and already regrets it, is asked to sort the clerk's papers because nobody else has the patience for them.

The ledger balances. That is the first thing that bothers her.

By the time the sugar maples turn, Nora has learned that a town of nine hundred can keep a secret for forty years, as long as everyone agrees on the same small lie.

Getting them to stop agreeing is the hard part.

What the River Keeps

The Mill River runs high every April, and every April the town agrees it is nothing to worry about.

Then the water pulls the bank out from under the old covered bridge and leaves a rusted station wagon sitting in the shallows, doors open, forty years of silt inside.

Nora Beckett remembers the family that owned it. She also remembers the story everyone told about where they went.

Now she has the car, a box of waterlogged photographs, and a selectboard that would very much like the bridge repaired before anybody asks a second question.

Some things a river keeps. Some things it hands back.

The Ridge Road

The Ridge Road climbs out of Millbrook Crossing, crosses the town line, and comes down again in Hartley Falls. For most of a century that has been all anybody needed to know about it.

In November a hiker finds a car parked at the height of land with a full tank, a cold engine, and a note that is not a note.

The driver is a woman Nora Beckett sat beside at town meeting for nine years without once asking what she did before she moved up here.

The answer turns out to be the sort of thing a person moves to Vermont in order to stop being.

Nora has three days before the first real snow closes the ridge, and everyone she needs to talk to lives on the far side of it.
